Why This Matters

Many theologically conservative Christians feel misunderstood and unfairly characterized as unkind or bigoted when their genuine intention is to engage with others from a place of love, integrity, and deeply held beliefs. As one participant noted, “In my program, conversations on LGBTQ issues are so fraught with emotion and tension that we can’t even dialogue about it in a way that doesn’t start to devolve.”

The FHL Initiative offers a proactive and practical framework for dialogue, empowering participants to engage authentically with others without compromising their faith. The goal is to create leaders who can model grace, compassion, and understanding in their personal, professional, and academic lives.

The FHL Approach: A Values-Based Framework

The Faith, Hope, and Love Initiative is built around four foundational components:

1. Humanizing and Creating Hope

• Through personal storytelling, hospitality, and compassionate dialogue, participants are invited to see one another’s humanity and find hope for a positive way forward.

• The process begins with a warm, open invitation to explore complex topics without fear of judgment or dismissal.

2. Affirming Common Values

• Participants engage with their own faith and values while identifying shared values of faith, hope, and love.

• Through self-reflection, peer discussions, and sharing stories, students deepen their understanding of how their values can guide compassionate engagement.

3. Offering Knowledge & Tools

• Practical frameworks and accessible tools are introduced to help participants navigate conversations about sexuality, gender, and faith with clarity and confidence.

• The focus is on providing simple, effective ways to engage without feeling overwhelmed or pressured to compromise personal beliefs.

4. Building Integrity and Belonging

• Participants are guided through the “3 Bs” of integrity: Belief, Being, and Behavior, reflecting on how these elements work together to form an integrated whole.

• The final “B” — Belonging — emerges from this process, creating alignment between personal integrity and a compassionate connection with others.

The Impact

Feedback from the pilot program has been overwhelmingly positive. Faculty and students alike describe the FHL Initiative as “transformative,” “compassionate,” and “hope-giving.” The process has proven effective not only in fostering understanding of LGBTQ individuals but also in enhancing broader skills for engaging with all kinds of differences.

Participants leave the program feeling more confident, equipped, and ready to act as compassionate leaders — creating bridges of understanding in their academic, professional, and personal lives.

Looking Ahead

The Faith, Hope, and Love Initiative is growing. Students, faculty, and religious leaders have expressed strong interest in expanding the initiative to reach more people across Christian colleges, universities, and professional settings.

We invite you to join us on this journey of faith, hope, and love. Let’s explore how this initiative can make a difference on your campus or within your organization.

Empowering Faithful Leaders to Build Bridges with Compassion and Integrity

The Faith, Hope, and Love (FHL) Initiative is a groundbreaking program that equips graduate students from Christian colleges, universities, and professional schools to navigate complex issues of faith, sexuality, and gender with compassion, integrity, and grace. Our mission is to empower these emerging leaders to stay strong in their faith and convictions while building bridges of understanding and dialogue with LGBTQ individuals and communities.

The FHL Initiative recently completed a successful pilot program with students and faculty from Brigham Young University and Fuller Theological Seminary, demonstrating the transformative power of values-based dialogue rooted in faith, hope, and love.
